AUTOMATED INSTRUCTION, DIAGNOSTIC ASSESSMENT, AND REMEDIATION
Teacher Resources Inc.'s management team has an 18 year history of developing educational software products. For example, the on-line, independent self- paced study product we created in 1997 was used for 15 years by more than 2,000 public schools to improve their academic programs and to assist approximately 1.5 million students in recovering high school credits and to graduate from high school. Throughout this entire period, we never had a dissatisfied client and more than 99% of these school system clients renewed their yearly contracts, some for as long as 15 years.
In spite of what we, and other providers, initially believed about the effectiveness of self-paced independent study programs, studies conducted by Johns Hopkins University's Center for Social Organization of Schools and the State of Massachusetts' Department of Education showed these types of independent self-paced study systems were not effective in providing students with a life-long educational experience. This was because students who used independent study as the sole source of their instruction failed to retain as much as 50% of what they had learned in as little as six weeks.
The Massachusetts study also revealed 11 "essential conditions" that schools and teachers must perform on a daily basis, if they wish to have an effective academic program. Unfortunately, these 11 items are so time consuming and laborious that few teachers, if any, can perform these tasks and still have enough time to deliver effective instruction.
In fact, other studies, books, and articles conducted or written by numerous educational institutions across the nation, supported the belief of many educators that on-line self-study products were not the panacea claimed by their developers. This was because students rarely had a time to engage in discussions with a teacher or other students, and rarely, if ever, were able to revisit previously failed areas in the curriculum to correct their own mistakes and misconceptions about what they had read. Perhaps the greatest weakness of independent study systems was the lack of methods by which students could self-assess their understanding of the material on a continual basis and be automatically provided remedial material that addressed their needs.
The revealing of these deficiencies helped us to create an entirely new type of on-line delivery system that totally contained pre-written applications that automated all of the instructional, assessment, diagnosis, and remediation tasks that teachers now had to perform manually. Through the use of automation, teachers can now focus almost all of their duties on the delivery of instruction and in providing targeted remedial help to students in need.
